Game Room Reorganization
The tyranny of magnet and foam case is over. The age of the rolling shelf has begun.
My wife and I have been slowly wearing down our children in a war of attrition to clean and reorganize the house. So far we have raised our banner in my son’s bedroom (which he quite likes now that he actually has room to play and space to close the door to keep his sister out) and have made a strong push into the living room and the ‘GI Joe room’. The guest bedroom and ‘stuffed animal room’ have been improved, but require a brigade-sized commitment, at least, especially in this heat.
However, I have made large strides reclaiming space on the third floor all by myself. Not only do I now have the room for more miniature wargames terrain, I have been able to send the nearly one-dozen metal boxes, toolboxes, and foam cases into storage with the help of these sliding shelves. Those boxes are useful for transporting minis, but terrible at storing. And since I only transport my armies a couple of times a year, it’s not worth it.
I bought this wooden eight-drawer cart by Linon. I already built a similar model to organize a portion of my son’s GI Joe and Star Wars figures in easily visible rows, and I knew it would work well for holding even relatively tall miniatures. The stability was very good, much better than those plastic drawers which often bow or get stuck when you open and close them. I can, of course, cover the shelves in magnetic paper if I want more stability, but right now the small gain doesn’t seem to be worth the time and expense.
Another plus is that the drawers easily come out, so they can be removed to place a whole army on the table. Better still, the extra vertical space means my antennas, banner poles, raised lances, and pintle-mounted machine guns won’t be constantly broken off.
I used the two large drawers on the bottom to hold bigger vehicles, although it still wasn’t tall enough to allow Kriegersaurus Koenig to stand up.
I still have room left over, but I need at least two more of these, especially if I want to transfer my painted 25mm Star Wars, fantasy naval vessels, and large 3d printed models like the armored trains.
How do you store your wargaming miniatures and terrain? I’d like to hear from you.
I use clear plastic totes from Walmart. They allow me to see what is in them. They stack well, and come in a variety of sizes.
