Excellent article! I did play some board games back in the day and dabbled in W40K but with borrowed, premade armies. I was interested to the point where everything turned into a slog of minmaxing. DnD became a much different, more personalized kind of boargaming which I still enjoy to this day.
I find campaign games to be the most fun. I was a part of the Bolt Action Facebook group, that unfortunately turned into a quagmire of rule elitists bemoaning Version 3 of the rules. A few brave souls tried to keep up the fun, but alas they were squashed, and the campaign was ended. ie, it was a bunch of tournament players whining about having their lists not being good anymore.
